Career Lessons Learned (So Far) From The World Cup
Career Lessons Learned (So Far) From The World Cup If youre not one of the billions whove been watching World Cup Soccer, youre missing out on some key career lessons. Now I understand, you cant watch every game over the course of a month. (The World Cup lasts from June 11th to July 11th.)But you can get the highlights here of the most important career lessons learned so far from the players, coaches and fans.(Photo courtesy of US Army Africa.)Career Lessons Learned from the World CupMeditate and visualize your goals coming to fruition It works! Just ask US Midfielder Landon Donovan. He scored the winning goal with just minutes remaining to push the US into the second round of play. In a post-game interview, Donovan said he meditates and visualizes himself scoring goals as preparation. Sounds like a great strategy for any goal with a soccer ball or not. (Learn more onHow to psych yourself up for success.)Dont wait to be tested to bring your A game. The coach for Italy dismissed media reports that his team had delivered lackluster pl ay in their matches stating there was no need to play hard because they hadnt really been tested. Unfortunately in a must-win game against Slovakia, the Italians came up short and lost the match. Italy shocked the world by failing to make the second round after having won the entire World Cup tournament in 2006. Get in the habit of doing your best even when you dont have to. It will build your confidence and abilities for those times theyre needed most. (Read more on Avoiding the Summer Slump.)Cooler heads really do prevail. Unfortunately the French team fell into disarray when conflicts between some players and coaches erupted in a flurry of resignations. France failed to make the second round and the remaining team members headed home. Emotions can get the best (or rather worst) of us if we let them. When youre upset with your colleagues or boss, dont react from emotion but calm down first and act with reason. It may sound easier said than done but in hindsight Im sure many of the French players and coaches have learned this lesson the hard way and publically. (Watch my video on How to Deal with a Difficult Boss.)I hope youll join me and catch a match or two of this 2010 World Cup. Even watching on TV, the energy and excitement are palpable and uplifting. You might even learn a thing or two you can apply back at the office.Go USA!!!!!!!!!!!(Second and third photos courtesy of JasonWhat.)

Data Security Is An Executive Issue
Data Security Is An Executive Issue Weve all seen the news reports on data breaches in retail. Even the President is getting involved by signing an Executive Order to combat the growing concern of identity fraud. But this security problem affects the corporate arena just as much as it affects the shopping cart. We all have to be aware that somebody is monitoring our online behavior and looking for a chance to make money somehow. That someone could be a marketer, or they could be a hacker and the effects of their motives affect our lives. Be Aware of Security in Your Job Search There isnt a good way to find a job without being online somehow, unless you are in a unique situation. For most of us, an online job search brings privacy issues and the need to understand how and why security measures are important. This is a basic living skill in the world we inhabit, so it makes sense to keep an eye on developments. Being aware of security and how it affects data becomes an asset in your career, because you have already developed an awareness that will protect your personal information and your employers. Be Aware of Security in Your Career Every business entity has security concerns. The risks of data exfiltration are high because the ability to save to the cloud with a single click makes it easy to put potentially sensitive information where it shouldnt be. Staff and management alike need to be educated, and that training needs consistent reinforcement to keep data where it belongs. Executives who maintain a respect and awareness of the challenges of data security will be ahead of the game because the discipline needed for secure habits is already there. As the responsibility in an organization increases, the security needed will also increase, so if you want to move up the corporate ladder, this skill is an asset.

How to Maximize Your Professional Network
How to Maximize Your Professional Network Networking is a lot easier than it used to be. Thanks to social media, we can build, secure, and maintain our connections with greater ease, and often from the comfort of home. But, when itâs crunch time, will your professional network come through for you? Here are some tips for helping to ensure that your connections think of you when it matters most ⦠for example, when the perfect job opportunity opens up. Keep everyone up-to-date. Social media can be a very powerful tool for professional networking, but you have to commit to investing some real time in it. Itâs essential that you keep your profile up-to-date, and be sure to avoid some common mistakes while youâre at it. Also, when you are physically with folks in your network, really talk to them. Ask about whatâs happening with their work, and share your experiences and your goals, too. People will be much more likely to reach out to you if they know what youâre doing. Read Next: 10 High-Paying Part-Time Jobs Keep it simple. You know that look that someone gets in their eye when theyâve stopped listening to you? Youâre going along, telling your story, or sharing your idea, when all of a sudden you realize that youâve lost their attention. Thereâs a real risk of this happening when youâre networking, especially when itâs time to talk about what youâre up to (as opposed to listening to their story). So instead, think short and sweet, as in âelevator pitch.â Be clear and concise. If you can communicate who you are and what youâre looking for in a succinct and captivating way, the members of your network will be more likely to remember what youâre all about when the right opportunity knocks. One excellent strategy for accomplishing this is to be the kind of person that lends a hand to others in a time of need, without (and this is the key) expecting anything in return. Youâre not doing this so that they will do something nice for you later ⦠but that doesnât mean it wonât happen anyway. Once youâve etched a grove in someoneâs mind thatâs positive, it can be pretty tough to reverse that. Be good to others without expecting anything back, and itâs likely that the same will be done for you down the road.

How Meditation Can Help Your Job Search - Work It Daily
How Meditation Can Help Your Job Search - Work It Daily There are several things you canât control when you're on the job search, especially today. Jobs are limited, the way you look for jobs has changed, and you never truly know why employer X decided to hire candidate Y instead of you. However, beating yourself up about why you couldnât get the job isnât going to get you anywhere. In fact, it will make the process a lot harder, and the chances of ever finding employment will continue to dwindle. Related: 5 Yoga Practices That Make You More Productive A few months ago, there was an article on Mashable that talked about how oneâs attitude can really make a difference when it comes to attracting employers. It advises job seekers to come up with positive phrases about themselves to not just give them the confidence they need when things get frustrating, but also to show hiring managers a person who doesnât carry any baggage, someone who is confident and positive even in the dimmest of situations. But how do we get there? How can we get out of our depressed state when all we can think about are things like: How am I going to afford rent next month? How am I supposed to feed my kids? Will I be able to afford gas next week? The key is to get into the right mindset. Before we can start thinking positively about ourselves, we have to take a deep breath, relax, and meditate. According to HelpGuide.orgâ"a non-profit dedicated to combating anxiety, stress, depression, among other thingsâ"suggests âbringing your nervous system back into balanceâ in order to fight âoverwhelming stress.â Here are some of the sites suggestions on how to do just that: Get Off The Couch Relaxing doesnât necessarily mean you should sleep more, or lie down for longer periods of time. Itâs about getting your mind active that will leave you and your body, ârelaxed, calm, and focused.â HelpGuide.org recommends setting aside 10-20 minutes a day for relaxation sessions to get you started. If thatâs not enough and you have the time to commit, you can always extend the sessions. Take Deep Breaths Weâve all heard this one at some point in our lives, but I bring it up because itâs one of the easiest meditation methods, and doesnât require a whole lot. It consists of sitting comfortably, not slouching, resting one hand on your chest, the other on your stomach, and breathing deeply. Getting Rid Of Tension If you feel your muscles are tense, this relaxation method can help with that. Start by slipping into clothing that is loose fitting, remove your shoes, and like the deep breathing technique, get in a comfortable position. You start with your right foot and tense out the muscles by squeezing your foot as firmly as you can. Try to relax your foot and concentrate on the pressure flowing away. You repeat the sequence on other parts of your body. Stay Calm, Stay Focused Mindfulness meditation allows you to âreduce overwhelming stressâ by concentrating on âa single repetitive action.â It requires you to find a place that is quiet and private. Like the methods mentioned above, you should get comfortable and find something to focus on. It could be an object in the room, or an internal thought. You can close your eyes if it helps more with your focus, and if you have several thoughts running through your mind, let them flow, while calmly always going back to your focus. So the next time youâre feeling frustrated or stressed, remember that you can do something about it with these helpful relaxation techniques. The only person who can get you out of your funk is you. For more detailed relaxation techniques, be sure to visit the HelpGuide.org website. This post was originally published at an earlier date.
